The Tofu Burger Recipe my Kid Will Eat!
Did you know that it takes the same amount of time to make Tofu burgers as it does to make a regular burger? It’s the same process. Take the ingredients, mash them together, form into a patty and heat. One thing you don’t need to worry about is the internal temperature! You can eat vegetables raw- you can’t do the same with meat. But more of that later in the post.
This tofu burger only has 5 ingredients: tofu, peas, onion, eggs, and oats. Then there are the seasonings, but you can do any you want. I used Smoked paprika, garlic, and garam masala (a very popular Indian spice). Combine everything in the bowl of a food processor until it has the right texture, and form into patties. Then grill!
It really is that simple to make amazing veggie burgers.
Then you get to garnish it any way you want. I love red onion, arugula, a slice of swiss cheese, chili powder mayo, and a little dijon mustard.
What I love about this dish
First of all the flavor. And that it is packed full of healthy proteins, that it cooks like a regular burger, and that it freezes really well.
I use fresh onion instead of onion powder, and leave out the tomato paste.
Also, did you know that tofu has all the essential amino acids that are also found in meat. That makes it a complete protein by itself.
It only uses half of a block of extra-firm tofu that has been pressed to drain all the water from it.
You can also use a press to remove the excess liquid from the block of tofu. Once the tofu block is “dry” break it into tofu pieces (crumble) it into a food processor and add all the other ingredients.
Pulse it several times until it all comes together, and then form into the traditional burger patties. Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and roll them into individual balls. Then use your (clean) hands and shape it into a circle about 3/4 inch thick.
Then place each patty onto parchment-lined baking sheets and let sit for about 20 minutes (ideally in a fridge) to let everything bind together. This is an important step.
When it comes time to cook, these are best cooked on a well-oiled cast iron skillet on medium-high heat. The frying pan I use has “grill marks” on it which really makes the patty look like it came from a BBQ.
Really I like a very spicy tofu burger – so I add things like my chili oil to the bun, as well s the spicy mayo.
One issue is that meatless burgers aren’t really juicy. Another is that the patties don’t make firm burgers. These are things I’ve tried to address in this recipe. Let me know how I did- use the hashtag #bohemianVegetarian on Instagram.
To put it all together, start with a good, high-quality hamburger bun. I like to use a brioche bun, personally. Then put down the first layer – a dressing or sauce of your choice – BBQ sauce is a great start. Then the patty. Then the fixings. Then the bun tops it all off.
The Special Detail
In this recipe, it’s the garam masala. Translated to English it means “warming spices” and it is supposed to actually increase metabolism. But for me, it gives the burger a little kick and that interesting but delicious flavor that nobody can quite guess what it is. I also have the garlic dialed up, which keeps the vampires away.
Substitutions and alterations
Gluten-Free option – This tofu patty is 100% gluten-free. The oats don’t have any wheat protein. Of course, depending on the type of bun you use there could be gluten. Just be mindful.
Vegan Option – I use eggs as a binder to hold everything together (since I’m a vegetarian) but you could use soy sauce. or even olive oil or even both. I’d slowly add it to see how everything binds together and make sure it still has the right vegan burger texture. There are a lot of great vegan tofu burger recipes out there and maybe someday I’ll try my hand at one.
Carnivore Option – Mcdonald’s.
I also like to use the firmest tofu I can get. Soft tofu just doesn’t work as well, because it doesn’t have the right “texture”
